International outlook, research impact boost UOW's standing in Times Higher Education rankings

The University of Wollongong (UOW) has been named among the world’s top 250 universities in the 2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, released in the United Kingdom overnight (Wednesday 26 September AEST).

The University has continued to build on its international ranking success, moving to the 201-250 bracket, from 251-300 last year.

It was ranked as the 10th best university in Australia, with 1258 universities from 86 countries considered in the list.

The annual rankings measure five key performance indicators that represent the breadth of a university’s core missions: teaching, research, citations, international outlook, and industry income.

UOW received its strongest ranking in international outlook, demonstrating its growing impact as a global university, with campuses in Hong Kong, Dubai, and Malaysia, and collaborations with institutions around the world.

The positive results come on the back of UOW’s success in the recent QS World University Rankings and the Academic Ranking of World Universities, both of which placed UOW inside the top 250.

It is the first time UOW has been in the top 250 worldwide in the three most prestigious ranking systems.

At the heart of UOW’s strong rankings performance is the University’s demonstrated research impact. An increase in the number of citations each faculty member has placed in top academic journals around the world has played a significant role in UOW continuing to climb the rankings ladder.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Wellings CBE said the results demonstrated the University’s immense research capacity and commitment to research outcomes.

“We are really pleased with this result. UOW is consistently improving its performance in an environment that is becoming increasingly competitive,” Professor Wellings said.

“This achievement, placing in the top 250 universities worldwide in three top-tier rankings systems, reflects the drive, ambition, and talent of UOW’s staff, across all faculties and fields.

“Our researchers continue to lead the way in producing quality, accessible research that leads to positive economic and social outcomes.

“We are also thrilled to see UOW receive such a high ranking for international outlook. It reflects our commitment to ensuring the University is a player on a global stage, and our students become citizens of the world, as we work towards our goal of being in the top one percent.”

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, which was founded in 2004, are released annually and provides a list of the world’s best universities.

Last month, UOW received its second consecutive jump in the Academic Ranking of World Universities, to a position of 246. In June, the University was placed 218 in the QS World University Rankings.

In the 2019 Good Universities Guide, released earlier this month, UOW was ranked first in NSW and given five-star ratings for Student Retention, Skills Development, Learning Resources, and Learner Engagement.
